Perfect Imperfection
Society is constantly judging imperfection while hailing perfection as the standard to strive towards. Not only is such a mentality corrosive to one’s own self-worth but it is also somewhat backward. What comes to your mind when you think of beauty? Depending on your perspective, beauty will manifest itself in a variety of ways for each individual. However, one thing that all these versions of beauty hold in common are that they are typically uncommon traits and features compared to the general population. Most people are not naturally muscular. Most people do not have vibrantly colored eyes. Most people do not have, however you deem it, beautiful hair. These are just a few examples of the many stereotypical traits people have associated with beauty and perfection.
The reality is that the traits we idolize in our respective cultures are all genetic mutations. Mutations that are “mistakes” in the genetic code and “imperfect” replications of certain genes. These genetic imperfections are the roots of some of the traits we view as rare and attractive in people. It is, therefore, possible to argue, that perfection actually lies within imperfection and that to truly appreciate the beauty in one another, we must accept the imperfections that we all possess.
